About Christmas Tree Lane & CTLA

What is Christmas Tree Lane?

Christmas Tree Lane is a nearly one-mile stretch of Santa Rosa Avenue in Altadena, California, lined with majestic 135-year-old deodar cedar trees. Each winter, these towering trees are adorned with thousands of holiday lights, transforming the street into a glowing wonder visible for miles.

Designated a California State Historic Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Christmas Tree Lane is the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas lighting spectacle in the United States. It is also the only botanical landmark on the California State Registry.

Since 1920, this treasured Altadena tradition has brought warmth and wonder to generations of families and visitors — thanks to the continued efforts of the community.

What Is the Christmas Tree Lane Association (CTLA)?

The Christmas Tree Lane Association (CTLA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that preserves and maintains the Lane year after year. Founded in 1956, after the City of Pasadena ended its involvement with the lighting of the Lane, CTLA stepped in to keep the tradition alive – organizing the lighting, maintaining the trees, handling traffic safety, raising funds, and coordinating events.

CTLA relies entirely on donations, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts to string the lights, pay utility bills, cover liability insurance, and ensure the Lane remains a magical part of Altadena’s cultural heritage.

A Century of Community

1920 – The first string of lights is hung in the deodars.

1956 – CTLA is founded after Altadena residents vote against Pasadena annexation.

1964 – Southern California Edison installs a permanent grid system to power the lights.

1990 – The Lane becomes both a California State Historic Landmark and is added to the National Register of Historic Places.

2000s–Today – CTLA faces rising costs from deregulated power and insurance needs, sustained only by generous support from the community.

Governance

CTLA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected each March. The Board meets monthly to plan operations, coordinate events, manage fundraising efforts, and steward this historic community treasure.

Why It Matters

Christmas Tree Lane isn’t just a street — it’s a symbol of community, continuity, and the magic of the season. For over 100 years, neighbors have come together to light the Lane, preserving one of Altadena’s most cherished traditions. But it doesn’t happen on its own.
